Hersey Meters - Company Background

Hersey Meters was founded in 1859 as Hawes and Hersey for the manufacture of rotary pumps, bolts and general machinery. Over the next thirty years, what had become Hersey Brothers continued to patent and produce a wide variety of devices for use in diverse markets. Hersey sugar granulators and dryers revolutionized the sugar processing industry and were used worldwide. An entire line of soap manufacturing equipment; even the first steam-propelled fire engine in the City of Boston, were all manufactured by the Hersey Brothers. In the midst of this manufacturing boom, Hersey Meter Company was born. In 1885 with a patent issued to James A. Tilden of Hyde Park, Mass., the first Hersey water meter was manufactured. By 1889 Hersey meters were in operation in 35 states and 3 territories. Over the next 101 years, Hersey continued to manufacture water meters in the Boston area at two different locations.

In 2006, Hersey Meters was reorganized as a part of Mueller Water Products, Inc. and became a publicly traded company. Today, Hersey Meters manufacturing facility is located on 93 acres of rolling farmland in the Piedmont Region of central North Carolina. It is still an integral component of the Mueller Water Products, Inc. Hersey Meters continues to expand. Additions include a new molding area, register assembly room and Butterfly Valve assembly cell. The manufacturing facility now occupies over 142,000 square feet with adequate room for more expansion. The emphasis in the manufacturing areas is on point of use storage, cellular layout and value added production. New CNC lathes, plastic injection molding machinery and robotics offer complete control over manufacturing processes and permit vertical integration of product lines. Mueller Water Products, LLC. investment in Hersey Meters is paying dividends.
